Best U.S. Public Elementary Schools by State
One of the most important and exciting times for a family is choosing your kid’s first school. Some families are able to pay a premium for private school education, but the National Center for Education Statistics reports there are nearly five times as many children enrolled at public schools than private ones nationwide. And with so many options, even in small towns, families might wonder which public elementary schools are the best.
We decided to put together the rankings for you. Using data from Niche, we’ve highlighted the best public elementary school in each state plus Washington, D.C., along with the four runners-up. The 2020 statistics reported by Niche use U.S. Department of Education data and other figures for its rankings, including state test scores, student-teacher ratio, student diversity, teacher quality, grade school ratings and overall quality of the school district. Here’s what the data shows.
Alabama: Madison Elementary School
Located in the city of Madison, the school has an enrollment of 575 students in grades K through 6 and its student-teacher ratio is 19 to 1. State test scores show 85 percent of students are proficient in math and 71 percent are proficient in reading. Madison is also ranked the 87th-best public elementary school in America.

State test scores show 85 percent of students are proficient in math and 90 percent are proficient in reading. Sidney also boasts the top-ranked public elementary school teachers in Alaska.

Located in the city of Flagstaff, the school has an enrollment of 640 students in grades 3 through 12 and a student-teacher ratio of 11 to 1. State test scores show 83 percent of students are proficient in math and 80 percent are proficient in reading. BASIS is also ranked the second-best charter elementary school in America and the fourth-best public elementary school in the nation.

State test scores showed 83 percent of students were proficient in math and 86 percent were proficient in reading.
