Fashion Fans Recreate Celeb Looks in Met Gala Challenge
On May 4, 2020, celebrities would have walked the red carpet for the annual avant-garde Met Gala. Often described as the "Oscars of fashion," this year's event at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art was set to coincide with the Costume Institute's "About Time: Fashion and Duration" exhibition.
Of course, the live Met Gala has been postponed indefinitely, but fashion fans couldn't simply take that as an answer. Instead, they've taken to social media to participate in the Met Gala Challenge, challenging friends and family to post recreated versions of past Met Gala looks. The results are truly amazing, reminding us that even over-the-top fashion cannot be stopped in the time of COVID-19. Just take a look for yourself.
Recreating Diane Kruger
"Just found out about the #MetGalaChallenge two hours ago and had to get in on the fun! The challenge is to recreate a past Met Gala look using only materials that you have at home. Here’s my recreation of Diane Kruger in @prabalgurung in 2018, made with: two bath towels, two hand towels and a washcloth (not a matching set, naturally); a gazillion safety pins, aluminum foil, headband, tape, tulle, a throw pillow strategically held in place to make the butt poufs extra pouffy." — shannon_the_sloth

"Recreating one of my favorite Met Gala looks ever with the help of a tarp, some Christmas lights and packing tape. I think Alessandro Michele would approve." — mindykaling
Recreating Rihanna
"The most challenging part about this was I only used poster board, glue, fabric and scissors with no formal training. I still did my best and Bae is proud! @theshaderoom should see this so tag them. Did I mention, it’s still not finished?" — jaidotfoot

Recreating Ariana Grande
"Today is the final day to submit for the #metgalachallenge; has anyone else submitted? Here’s a nifty little side-by-side of the bastard toilet paper version of Ariana Grande’s 2018 look. (Ye olde necessary disclaimer for those stumbling upon this for the first time: 2.5 rolls used, now hanging in the bathroom for obligatory repurposing, have a nice day.)" — bernadettebanner

"Pink isn't just a color. It's an attitude, too." — totaleminnie
Recreating Lana Condor
"For this challenge, I really wanted to choose a look that was close to my heart and use sustainable materials! I’ve admired @lanacondor ‘s work ever since I watched To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before because It was the first time I had seen a half Asian half Caucasian character being played on western media. Representation truly matters and I was so happy seeing someone like me on screen. At the 2019 #MetGala, she wore a dress by @giambattistavalliparis I absolutely love their work with tulle, and it actually inspired one of my pieces in my last collection." — noedresses
Recreating Tracee Ellis Ross
"I look forward to the fashion of the Met Gala each year and, in honor of it, decided to do the #metgalachallenge (and with supplies around my house). I went with @traceeellisross’ 2019 Met Gala look, which was inspired by the artwork of Lorraine O’Grady. O’Grady’s 'art is...' is a collection of photographs in which she used a gold frame to give black people a place in art." — krishaleanne

Recreating Lena Waithe
"I’m not doing her justice, but #LenaWaithe inspires me to be better creatively, a better Gay-American & an overall better human being. And to one day attend the MET gala!" — thejohnnylopez
Recreating Natasha Lyonne
"#metgalachallenge is tonight, and the incomparable @tommylenk is pretty much nailing the #virtualredcarpet — and quarantine conference call fashion at the same time (though there is some tough competition from some pretty nifty preschoolers wielding tinfoil)." — septiemeetage
Recreating Nina Dobrev
"Nina Dobrev’s 2019 Met Gala look." — metgala_nina
Recreating Zoe Saldana
Recreating Rihanna
"#metgalachallenge accepted! In honor of what would’ve been the Met Gala tonight ... here’s one of my fave looks recreated by me. It was so much fun making this costume for Halloween! The original look was by @maisonmargiela worn by the baddest herself @badgalriri for the Heavenly Bodies exhibit at the @metmuseum." — gigidecoo
You Can Really Never Have Too Much Rihanna
"Channeling my inner #Rihanna today with a splash of #whimsy for y’all. So, I asked my dear friend @michaelirathayer to choose ANY #metgala red carpet look to recreate with just items I have at home and he chose this iconic piece! Michael, I challenge you to recreate Cardi B’s white gown. You have 24 hrs. @amandascarlett5 and @nicolevaccaro I challenge YOU two to pick looks for each other to recreate!!" — bebbabee
